When staring down a tight filter housing, you might notice raised plastic tabs or fins near the base and wonder what tool you need to grip them. Many people think they must use a specific wrench style - one with notches incorporated into the side, like the one pictured below, to interface with this system.

However, using a notched wrench on these housings is a major mistake. Here is why you should avoid notched filter wrenches and how upgrading to a precision, no-notch tool will save your engine and your weekend.

The Misunderstood Plastic Tabs

To understand why a notched wrench is dangerous, you first need to understand the anatomy of a cartridge filter housing. The factory permanent housing - usually made of plastic - has two distinct features: the multi-flute hex ring around the top, and the breakable tabs around the wider base.

A common misconception is that those lower tabs or fins are designed to be involved in the process of removing or installing the cap. They are not. Those tabs are strictly there to engage a spring locking mechanism that some (but not all) engines have to prevent the cap from working itself loose during operation.

The Danger of Notched Wrenches

When you head to the auto parts store, you will often find generic, mass-produced stamped-steel wrenches with deep cutouts along the bottom. These notches are designed to slide down and grab those fragile plastic tabs on the base of the housing.

Applying heavy removal torque to these inherently weak plastic tabs almost always results in disaster. Remember, these tabs are meant to engage with the spring lock system; they're not meant to be grabbed and torqued on by a filter wrench. Wrenches that engage these tabs are highly likely to crack or break the tabs entirely, or snap the spring locking mechanism off. If this happens, it can result in a significant oil leak and significant damage.
