Toyota, Lexus, and Scion Cartridge Oil Filter System Explained

Do you have a new or new-to-you used Toyota, Lexus, or Scion and plan to tackle your own oil change? If so, you might be in for a surprise. If you get under it expecting to find a traditional oil filter, be prepared - you likely find a cartridge style filter that can require special tools to get the job done. Don't be discouraged - this is incredibly common.

Let's cover everything you need to know about this Toyota cartridge-style oil filter system. We’ll explain why your old standard oil filter wrench won't work, outline the different types of Toyota filter housings, and show you why investing in a high-quality Toyota oil filter wrench can save you from massive headaches and expensive repairs down the road.

Spin-On vs. Toyota Cartridge Filters

When most of us think of an oil filter, we picture the traditional spin-on or canister-style filter. With those traditional filters, you just unscrew the whole metal can, throw it away, and spin a new one on.

The Toyota, Lexus, and Scion cartridge-style oil filter systems are entirely different. They use a reusable screw-on housing (made of plastic or metal) that holds a replaceable pleated paper filter element. Instead of throwing the whole unit away, you only replace the yellow or white paper filter and the rubber O-rings, then reinstall the housing.

Because of this specialized design, standard oil filter tools won't work properly and can actually cause damage. Most of the Toyota oil filter wrenches you see out there are designed to fit down over the plastic tabs of the filter housing, running the risk of breaking off those tabs and causing an oil leak. Motivx Toyota filter wrenches are a superior design - and - if you do have a standard spin-off filter, it will work on it, too.

Identifying Your Toyota Filter Housing

Toyota generally uses two main styles of filter housings, which depend on your engine size:

  • The 1.8L Housing: Commonly found on 1.3L and 1.8L 4-cylinder engines, this version is typically made of plastic. It does not feature a center drain valve.
  • The 2.5L - 5.7L Housing: Used on larger engines (2.5L and 2.7L 4-cylinders, 3.5L and 4.0L 6-cylinders, plus 4.6L and 5.7L V8s), this housing can be either metal or plastic. You can easily spot it by its distinctly wider middle and the 3/8" drive metal plug at the bottom that covers a built-in drain valve.

The Secret To A Mess-Free 2.5L - 5.7L Oil Change

If you have the larger 2.5L - 5.7L housing, you've probably noticed the filter is mounted vertically. If you just unscrew it while it's full, you're going to make a massive, oily mess.

Thankfully, Toyota included that drain plug so you can empty the housing before removing it. By removing the metal plug, you can thread in the Motivx drain tool to cleanly empty the oil filter housing. Once the oil is safely drained, you can remove the empty housing without wearing used engine oil.

Clearing Up The 64mm Size Myth

If you've been shopping around for a wrench, you've likely seen conflicting information online. Some sources claim you need a 65mm or 65.5mm wrench to fit the 14-point hex ring on top of the housing.

Both are incorrect.

The actual measurement for both styles of Toyota housings is exactly 64.16mm. For simplicity's sake, we refer to the diameter as 64mm. Keep in mind that these housings expand and contract slightly based on engine heat and weather, which is why having a precision-fit tool is absolutely critical.

Does Your Wrench Choice Really Matter?

Short answer: Yes.

These plastic and metal housings are notorious for being overtightened, meaning they often require a serious amount of force (or even a breaker bar) to remove. If you use a cheap, poorly designed, or poorly fitting tool, you're asking for trouble:

  • Slipping and Rounding: A loose wrench will round off the flutes on the housing or get permanently wedged onto the cap.
  • Cracking the Housing: Many generic wrenches grab onto the delicate plastic tabs on the housing rather than gripping the flutes. This frequently snaps the tabs right off, leading to catastrophic oil leaks.
  • Tool Failure: Wrenches made from weak materials can easily crack, round out, or shatter under load.

The Solution: Precision CNC-Machined Motivx Tools

To avoid turning a standard maintenance job into an expensive nightmare, you need an oil filter wrench that makes secure, perfect contact with the housing without binding or breaking.

That’s exactly why we engineered the Motivx Tools Toyota, Lexus, and Scion oil filter wrench.

  • Precision CNC-Machined: Our wrenches are machined right here in the USA from premium 6061 T6 aluminum, making them vastly stronger than standard cast or stamped alternatives.
  • Reinforced Drive Hub: We took durability a step further by crafting the 3/8" drive hub out of 7075 aluminum - an incredibly strong material often used in the aircraft industry. We even anodize the hub red for high visibility and a great look.
  • Guaranteed for Life: These wrenches are designed to stand up to the toughest, most overtightened filter caps, guaranteed. We confidently back them with a Limited Lifetime Guarantee and expert customer service.

When you invest in a proper Toyota oil filter wrench, it pays for itself by saving you hundreds (or thousands) of dollars over the life of your vehicle compared to paying someone else to do it - or replacing a busted filter housing.
