The Problem With Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filter systems use a permanent plastic or aluminum housing. When it’s time for an oil change, you only replace the paper filter element inside. While this is great for the environment, the design is inherently messy.

When you unscrew the housing cap, the oil trapped inside the filter element has nowhere to go but down - usually straight down your arm. Automakers tried to solve this by including a small metal plug at the bottom of the housing and a cheap, plastic drain tool in the box with your new filter. The idea is to push the plastic tool into the housing to drain the oil before you unscrew the main cap.

The reality? That mass-produced plastic throwaway tool is flimsy, requires you to aggressively shove it into the housing (often resulting in an unexpected gush of hot oil), and doesn't route the oil cleanly into your drain pan.

Our drain tool features a threaded metal body and a flexible silicone hose. Simply thread the tool securely into the oil filter housing. Once it's attached, twist the knurled knob to open the internal valve. The trapped oil flows cleanly and directly through the hose and into your catch pan - not down your arm.

2. Remove the Housing Safely: Once the housing is drained, it’s time to remove the cap itself - a job made simple with our precision CNC-machined filter cap wrench.
