How To Do A Mess-Free Oil Change

Nothing ruins garage therapy faster than a five-quart oil slick.

If you own a modern Toyota, Lexus, Scion, or any vehicle with a cartridge-style oil filter, you probably know this struggle all too well. While spin-on filters have their own quirks, cartridge filters are notorious for dumping oil all over your hands, your suspension components, and your driveway the second you start loosening the housing.

At Motivx Tools, we're all about helping you have complete confidence when working on your vehicle, without the frustration of an hour-long cleanup. That’s why we engineered our specialty oil filter wrench, drain tool, and funnel bundles.

Let's break down exactly why cartridge filters are so messy and walk you through how to do a 100% mess-free oil change using precision tools you can rely on.

The Problem With Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filter systems use a permanent plastic or aluminum housing. When it’s time for an oil change, you only replace the paper filter element inside. While this is great for the environment, the design is inherently messy.

When you unscrew the housing cap, the oil trapped inside the filter element has nowhere to go but down - usually straight down your arm. Automakers tried to solve this by including a small metal plug at the bottom of the housing and a cheap, plastic drain tool in the box with your new filter. The idea is to push the plastic tool into the housing to drain the oil before you unscrew the main cap.

The reality? That mass-produced plastic throwaway tool is flimsy, requires you to aggressively shove it into the housing (often resulting in an unexpected gush of hot oil), and doesn't route the oil cleanly into your drain pan.

The Mess-Free Solution

We grew tired of seeing the limitations of these cheap imported products. So, we started manufacturing our own.

As demonstrated by Jason in the video above, the Motivx Drain Tool takes the messwork (ba-dum-tsss) out of your maintenance routine. Here's the step-by-step breakdown:

1. Drain the Housing the Right Way: Once you've drained the main oil pan, it's time to tackle the filter. First remove the 3/8" drive metal plug from the bottom of the oil filter housing to expose the drain valve. Next, instead of reaching for the flimsy plastic piece that came with your filter, grab the Motivx Drain Tool.

Our drain tool features a threaded metal body and a flexible silicone hose. Simply thread the tool securely into the oil filter housing. Once it's attached, twist the knurled knob to open the internal valve. The trapped oil flows cleanly and directly through the hose and into your catch pan - not down your arm.

2. Remove the Housing Safely: Once the housing is drained, it’s time to remove the cap itself - a job made simple with our precision CNC-machined filter cap wrench.

Many generic wrenches flex under load, slip, and break the fragile plastic tabs on the housing. Our wrenches are machined right here in the USA from premium 6061 and 7075 aluminum alloys. They are built to exact specifications for a precise, non-slip fit that safely grabs the structural flutes of the housing.

3. Refill Without Spills: Hitting your target when pouring fresh oil out of a 5-quart jug can be a bit of a balancing act. When it is time to pour in the new oil, ditch the wobbly generic funnels.

Our Motivx Funnel screws directly into your engine's oil fill port, removing the possibility of messy tipping. It creates a sturdy, hands-free seal so you can pour your oil quickly and confidently.
