Step-by-Step How-To - 2007-2009 FJ Cruiser

  1. Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap, placing it in a safe spot near the hood latch to prevent closing the hood without adding oil.
  2. Remove the old oil filter: Place a collection bucket under the filter area. Use a Motivx filter wrench to loosen the filter and remove it, allowing the oil to drain into your catch basin.
  3. Install the new oil filter: Wipe the mounting surface clean, then coat the new filter's rubber gasket with a little fresh oil. Then, thread the filter or housing on by hand until it bottoms out. Use the Motivx wrench to tighten it approximately 3/4 of a turn more.
  4. Drain engine oil: Move to the underside of the vehicle. Remove the drain plug on the oil pan using a 14mm socket). Allow the oil to drain completely into the catch basin.
  5. Secure drain plug: Clean the drain plug and install a new gasket. Thread it back into the pan and torque it to 30 foot-pounds.
  6. Refill oil: Add at least 5.5 quarts of 5W-30 engine oil (some people need 6.4 quarters, depends on your oil pan configuration), then replace the fill cap.
  7. Check oil level: Start the engine for about 15 seconds to circulate the new oil, then shut it off. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and pull it out again to verify the oil level is between the low and max dots.
