Rear parking brakes were for the most part always activated by a cable that engaged the rear brake shoes against the rear brake drums. In the last 20 years give or take, rear brake shoes have been phased out and replaced with the more modern hydraulic disk brake system. Unlike front brake calipers which are purely hydraulically activated, the rear calipers also need a way to be mechanically activated to function as a parking brake. Like a typical disk brake caliper, as the brake pads wear the piston becomes extended and must be retracted to install new pads. Because of the mechanical action, the rear brake pistons on most modern vehicles must be screwed back into the caliper. This is not required on front calipers because they are strictly hydraulic, so the pistons can be pressed straight back into the caliper. The Motivx Tools brake wind back set properly retracts the pistons by rotating them while applying pressure.
If you have a vehicle with rear disk brakes, you will probably need either this 12pc set or our 18pc set to service the brake system. The best way to tell (without starting the job and having to stop) is to look in a service manual or online forum for your particular vehicle. Another good resource is searching YouTube for your vehicle and adding the words "rear brakes". There are many tutorial videos that will show you how the rear brake job is done on your vehicle and you'll know if you need to wind the pistons back or not.
The biggest difference is that it contains two thrust bolts instead of one, and the second thrust bolt is left hand thread. The thrust bolt is the long screw or bolt looking piece that drives the adapter. There are some (very few) vehicles that will require one of the rear caliper pistons to be rotated back in the right hand direction and other one that will require the left hand direction. The 18 piece set also contains more adapters for less common vehicles. If you're not sure which set you need, I would highly recommend picking up the 18 piece set. The cost isn't much more and you'll have the additional pieces in case you need them.
